Laundry...Norfolk Ghetto Style
I think I've outdone myself this time. I have gone completly ghetto...but when you really need to do some laundry after disconnecting the sewage line, desperate times call for desperate measures. I had water supply which wasn't a problem, but I was having a difficult time trying to figure out where the drainage was going to go. I couldn't put the hose out the window, since the access to my crawl space was directly underneath. So I emptied out one of the trash cans into the mini landfill and brought it inside to act as a temporary water treatment facility.
Wow, a landfill and a water treatment facility. I think I'll put a mini generator on my bike and me and the roommates can take turns pedaling. Then we'll be completly off the utility grid!
Anyway, below are some plans if you ever find yourself in this situation along with somewhat detailed pictures. Another thing that helps is the energy efficient low water useage front load washer with a pause button for when you need to empty out the can mid-load. Make sure the can doesn't have any holes in it either, or else it can turn into a bad day.
And one more quick note. Jack said it was completely red neck what we were doing. Well, I'd like to clarify that what we are doing is completely "ghetto". It depends on the demographic region in which you live whether you're "ghetto" or "redneck" Now if we were a bit more south, or perhaps out in the country, then we would be considered "redneck". Well, that's my opinion anyway.

It is a merging of both. Let me elaborate.
Ghetto is derived mostly from a location or demographic, whereas Redneck can be applied more towards an adjective. Wikipedia states:
"Ghetto" is used figuratively to indicate geographic areas with a concentration of any type of person, with or without poverty (e.g. gay ghetto) or for non-geographic categories (e.g. "sci fi ghetto" [1]). The term is also used to describe an item or an action as cheap or flimsy. Some consider this use of language to be an offensive misapplication[2]. Some people in the U.S. and Europe strongly dislike the term ghetto, believing to have racist, elitist and culturally insensitive overtones, and the mention of such a word to describe a working-class ethnic community is considered a generalization or an insult. Many social workers and community leaders suggest alternative words to describe these areas like inner city and economically disadvantaged areas as the location of the areas are often isolated from its outer worlds.
Whereas: Redneck has two general uses: first, as a pejorative for outsiders, and, second, as a term used by members within that group. To outsiders, it is generally a term for those of Southern or Appalachian rural poor backgrounds — or more loosely, rural poor to working-class people of rural extraction. (Appalachia also includes large parts of Pennsylvania, New York and other states.) Within that group, however, it is used to describe the more downscale members. Rednecks span from the poor to the working class. As noted earlier, usage of the term redneck differs from hick and hillbilly, because rednecks reject or resist assimilation to the dominant culture, while hicks and hillbillies are isolated from it. In this way, the redneck is similar to the cracker. Generally, there is a continuum from redneck (a derisive term) to the country person; yet there are differences. Rednecks typically are more libertine, especially in their personal lives, than their country brethren who tend towards social conservatism. Also, the lowest-class rednecks especially have a penchant for the obscene or outrageous.
Therefore, if we chose the ideal and mostly PC state from both of these descriptions, I would say:
You are economically disadvantaged cracker social-libertines devising cheap and flimsy workarounds with a definite penchant for the obscene and outrageous while outrightly resisting assimilation.
Voila.
I've also learned tonight via Wikipedia that if a redneck calls someone a redneck... Whoah, is that a low blow.
If a couple from the Appalachians moves to California and gets a divorce, are they still legally brother and sister?
vic,
Learn all you can, my house is next.
Your brother, John
